DIY Homemade Rabbit Treats: A Simple, Healthy Recipe

If you’re looking for a fun way to spoil your rabbit with healthy, homemade snacks, this easy recipe is perfect!

These treats are packed with bunny-friendly ingredients like hay, fresh fruits, and rabbit pellets, ensuring they stay nutritious while being absolutely delicious for your furry companion.

Plus, they're a great way to use up the hay at the bottom of the bag and avoid wastage.

Why Make Your Own Rabbit Treats?

Store-bought treats often contain added sugars and preservatives that aren’t always ideal for rabbits. By making your own rabbit treats at home, you can control the ingredients, ensuring your bunny gets the healthiest snack possible. Plus, it’s a fun way to bond with your pet while offering them something special.

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • Two handfuls of hay: Hay is a staple of a rabbit's diet, providing essential fiber that supports digestion.

  • ½ an apple: Adds a hint of sweetness and is safe for rabbits in moderation. Be sure to remove seeds.

  • ½ a banana: Great for binding the treats together while giving a natural sweetness. Plus, many bunnies including Apollo and Athena love bananas the most!

  • ½ cup rabbit pellets: Provides additional nutrition and ensures your rabbit is getting their daily dietary requirements, even in their treats.

  • A handful of leafy greens. I opted for a bunch of carrot tops, but you could use cauliflower leaves, parsley or other rabbit safe greens and herbs.

  • ½ cup water: Helps blend the mixture smoothly. Add splashes as needed to reach the right consistency.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Ingredients

Start by gathering all your ingredients. Place two handfuls of hay into a blender first, with some of the water (this will help keep dust levels down - I had hay dust everywhere my first try!).

Once blended, add ½ an apple (chopped), ½ a banana, and ½ cup of rabbit pellets into a blender.

Add the rest of the water to help blend everything together smoothly.

2. Blend the Mixture

Pulse the ingredients in the blender until it becomes a thick, stodgy mixture. If the mix seems too dry, add small splashes of water.

Keep blending until all ingredients are fully combined.

Make sure to check for any long pieces of hay that may not have blended well. You can pull these out to avoid them getting stuck in your treat dough.

3. Roll Out the "Dough"

Once the mixture is blended, remove it from the blender and place it on a clean surface. Roll the dough out flat to about ¼ inch thickness. This will make it easier to cut out the treat shapes.

We want the treats to be cripsy, so try not to make them too thick.

4. Cut the Treats

Using a small cookie cutter or a round object (like a bottle cap), cut the dough into small circles. These bite-sized pieces are perfect for rabbits. You can also get creative with different shapes if you'd like!

5. Preheat and Bake

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the cut treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until the treats are firm and slightly golden.

If you're worried about them burning (do NOT feed bunnies burnt treats) you can set a timer for 20 minutes & then keep checking as they cook from then onwards.

Again, make sure they do not burn!

6. Cool and Store

Once baked, turn off the oven, keeping the tray inside, and allow them to cool completely before serving them to your bunny. You can store any leftover treats in an airtight container.

Tips for Success:

  • Moderation is key: While these treats are healthy, they should still be given in moderation, just like any other snacks. Rabbits have delicate digestive systems, and too many treats can upset their tummies.

  • Use fresh ingredients: Make sure the apple and banana are fresh and free of any bruises. Fresh ingredients ensure your bunny gets the best possible nutrients.

  • Experiment with shapes: If you want to make the treats even more fun, experiment with different cookie cutter shapes, such as bunny or heart shapes.

Why This Recipe Is Perfect for Rabbits:

  • Nutritious Ingredients: Hay and rabbit pellets are essential for your rabbit’s diet, ensuring their digestive system stays healthy. The addition of apple and banana offers a fun treat, but without unnecessary sugars or preservatives found in store-bought snacks.

  • Easy to Make: With just a few simple steps, you can create a batch of bunny treats at home in under an hour.

  • Bonding Time: Making these treats is not only beneficial for your rabbit, but it’s also a great way to spend time together. Rabbits will appreciate the effort and love you put into making them something special.

Serving Suggestions:

Once the treats are fully cooled, you can serve them as a reward during training or as an occasional snack. Just remember to limit treats to about 1-2 per day depending on the size of your rabbit, to ensure their main diet of hay, fresh greens, and pellets remains the focus.
